SNR Denton operates in association with International Legal Group in Kuwait. Established in 2008, the office is part of our leading Middle East network, which comprises over 170 international lawyers, with offices and associate offices in Abu Dhabi, Amman, Bahrain, Beirut, Cairo, Doha, Dubai, Istanbul, Kuwait, Muscat and Riyadh. Offering more resources and a wider perspective than other advisers in the market, the office is uniquely positioned to advise clients on all aspects of doing business in Kuwait.

Our Kuwait office

The Kuwait office was founded by a US law firm in 1994 and joined the SNR Denton team in 2008. The office is staffed with nine lawyers, seven of whom are Western educated and four of whom are bilingual in Arabic and English.

Our team has extensive experience, representing a broad base of international and local corporations, government agencies and individuals, and provides legal advice on a wide range of commercial activities.

Three of our lawyers have the right of appearance before local courts, and two are qualified arbitrators. In addition, our local partner firm has a number of litigators who are available on an as-needed basis. We represent both plaintiffs and defendants (respectively, 15 percent and 85 percent of the practice) in dispute resolution involving Western and major local clients.

In 2010, Legal 500 ranked our office as First Tier in the following practice areas:

• Banking and finance

• Corporate and M&A

• Dispute resolution

• Privatization

• Project finance

In 2011, Corporate International ranked our office as the Best Full-Service Law Firm in Kuwait.

In Kuwait we operate as International Legal Group in association with SNR Denton & Co. Such associations are required under local practice regulations. The four principals of our local partner are Dr Rashid Al-Anezi, Dr Adel Al-Tabtabaie, Dr Ahmad Al-Samdan and Dr Abdullah Al-Hayyan. Each is a professor at the Kuwait University College of Law. Drs Al-Tabtabaie and Al-Samdan are also former Deans of the College of Law. Their advanced law degrees are from prestigious Western institutions including Cambridge University, Duke University, Tulane University and Aberystwyth University.

Select Team Members

The office is managed by David Pfeiffer, who has been resident in Kuwait for 16 years. Legal 500 notes that his clients distinguish him as "a trusted adviser" and an "eminent authority" on all Kuwait corporate matters including mergers and acquisitions.

Our Kuwait team routinely advises on commercial tax planning, cross-border transactions, tax legislation and tax regulations. In collaboration with globally-recognized accounting firms, our Kuwait team provides full-service Kuwait tax planning for international corporations. We are privileged to have as part of our team Mary Ann Sharp who, as Chambers and Partners has noted, is well known in Kuwait for her stellar Kuwait tax expertise in tax mitigation and disputes with the tax authority. She is also a sought after adviser for clients performing US government contracts in Kuwait, with extensive experience in US defense contracting, advising on both Kuwait laws and the US regulations. Having advised on Kuwait law for more than 14 years, Mary Ann has developed corporate and commercial expertise representing many blue-chip clients.

The newest member of our team is Karina Haum, a German national with 25 years' experience in corporate law. A former partner in a large New York law firm, Karina advises clients on global structuring and international investment with a focus on tax minimization, as well as all legal aspects of cross-border acquisitions and ventures, transfer pricing, foreign tax credits, and wealth planning for high-net-worth individuals. Karina moved to Kuwait in 2008 and has built a strong international practice from her position here.

In addition, we have six other resident SNR Denton lawyers in Kuwait.
